Alumnus/
Alumna
of the Year

Recognizes alumni that, post-PGSSC training, continue to exemplify the values of the PGSSC.

  • Requirements: Nominees must be an alumnus/alumna (listed as “past” on the PGSSC website). Individuals can self-nominate or be nominated by a PGSSC alumnus/alumna, current PGSSC member, or faculty member.

 

  • Nomination materials: Submission should include 1) a 1-2 page nominee CV, tailored to the award criteria, and 2) a 1-2 page nominator letter.

 

  • Prompt for letters: Describe how the nominee demonstrates the values of PGSSC: 1) Social Justice and Equity; 2) Zero Tolerance of Discrimination; 3) Accompaniment and Solidarity; 4) Evidence-based Innovation; and 5) Implementation and Solution. (Note, the nominating letter must include the nominee’s strengths in at least three of these values to be considered.) Nominations should include specific examples of the nominee's achievements, contributions, and involvement post PGSSC.

Surgery Leadership Award

Recognizes individuals who have led global surgery efforts and fostered pathways for others to engage in this work.

  • Requirements: All nominations must come from a PGSSC alumnus/alumna, current PGSSC member, or faculty member. These individuals can self-nominate. In addition, these individuals can nominate other potential awardees regardless of their affiliation with PGSSC. (I.e., individuals who are not affiliated with PGSSC can be nominated, but they must be nominated by a PGSSC alumnus/alumna, current PGSSC member, or faculty member.)  

  • Nomination materials: Submission should include 1) a 1-2 page nominee CV, tailored to the award criteria, and 2) a 1-2 page nominator letter. 

  • Prompt for letters: Describe how the nominee has, for at least five years, led the field of global surgery in the domains of education, advocacy, research, and/or clinical care and how the nominee has created pathways for other individuals to engage in this work. Letters should detail the nominee's achievements, leadership qualities, and impact in the field of global surgery.

Award

Recognizes an individual who directly supports individuals’ access to equitable, high-quality surgical care.  

  • Requirements: All nominations must come from a PGSSC alumnus/alumna, current PGSSC member, or faculty member. These individuals can self-nominate. In addition, these individuals can nominate other potential awardees regardless of their affiliation with PGSSC. (I.e., individuals who are not affiliated with PGSSC can be nominated, but they must be nominated by a PGSSC alumnus/alumna, current PGSSC member, or faculty member.) Nominees can be clinical or non-clinical and should work directly with patients requiring surgical care or provide support to those who work directly with patients requiring surgical care. Possible nominees include, but are not limited to: doctors, nurses, community health workers, obstetricians, surgeons, anaesthesiologists, general practitioners, physical therapists, administrators, data managers, quality improvement officers, monitoring and evaluation officers. 

  • Nomination materials: Submission should include 1) a 1-2 page nominee CV, tailored to the award criteria, and 2) a 1-2 page nominator letter.

  • Prompt for letters: Describe how the nominee has supported individuals’ access to surgical care, with a focus on equity, quality, and patient-centered care. Include details on how this person directly cares for patients requiring surgical care or provide support to those who work directly with patients requiring surgical care. Nominations should highlight specific examples of the nominee's contributions and impact in delivering surgical care under challenging circumstances to improve equity.
