Title: Global Health and Development Advocacy: building political priority for surgical care and universal health coverage

 

Laura Hoemeke, DrPH, MPH, is a global health consultant and adjunct professor at University of North Carolina (UNC) Gillings School of Global Public Health. Dr. Hoemeke is a member of the board of directors of the Global Alliance for Surgical, Obstetric, Trauma and Anesthesia Care (G4 Alliance) and the principal of Hoemeke Global, Ltd., providing technical assistance in health policy, advocacy, and strategic communications to ministries of health, governments, multilateral institutions, and foundations. She has worked and lived throughout Africa. She received her BS in journalism at Northwestern University, her MPH at the Johns Hopkins University, and her doctorate in health policy and management at UNC.

Speaker: William Holmes, MD, MPH

Title:  “Voices from the Peace Zone--Collaborating for Global Health”

 

William Holmes began his involvement with global health initiatives while in medical school, and the commitment has continued for more than four decades, as he has spent most of his professional life contributing to health and humanitarian projects in many of the world’s most vulnerable settings.

 

Following initial training in Family Practice, Holmes went on to complete Residency Training in General Surgery and Plastic Surgery, with additional Fellowships in Upper Extremity/Hand Surgery, Microsurgery, Craniofacial Surgery, and Pediatric Plastic Surgery. He has applied the full spectrum of these clinical skills providing service and training in every continent, and with program scope from community level to tertiary hospital.

 

Utilizing a degree and background in Public Health, Holmes has supported a wide range of international aid agencies and government health ministries with policy, evaluation, and strategic planning initiatives. In addition to helping to start hospitals in Afghanistan, Nepal, Cambodia and Bangladesh, he has contributed to programming with more than 20 government and humanitarian aid organizations, and in more than 60 countries affected by conflict, natural disaster, and development challenges.

 

In 2004, Holmes helped to establish the Third Monday Foundation which provides grants to grass-roots health and education projects in many of the challenging settings where he has worked.
